Jello Biafra at The Forum as part of the Melbourne International Arts Festival, October 22nd
I have to admit, I am a hugely enthusiastic Jello Biafra fan. My pseudonym is inspired by his name. I love him in The Dead Kennedys, with The Melvins and Guantanamo School of Medicine. I was so excited to be going to his spoken word performance at The Forum, even if it was just because I was going to see him. And yes I got very caught up in the moment, standing in awe with my camera tucked tight against my eye, clicking away.
He is every bit the man I’ve seen in early footage, even now as he enters middle age. He hasn’t lost any ability to scrutinise the American system, he was even well educated in our own political concerns, giving commentary on Occupy Melbourne, the Carbon Tax and Australian politicians.
I didn’t stay long (the problems with never having enough time to do anything!) but I was still so happy to have photographed Jello. I really do hope he comes back with Guantanamo School of Medicine later in the year, because I will be up front for sure!
